Independent Writing 잘 쓰는 법에 대해
알아보려고 합니다.
Independent Writing이란
주어진 주제에 동의하느냐, 동의 하지 않느냐 한쪽을
자신의 의견으로 정해 30분 동안 300자 이상으로
자신의 생각을 논리정연하게 써나가는 글입니다.
오늘은 주로 출제되는 주제 중 하나를 골라
어떻게 써야하는지 그 예를 보여드리고자 합니다.
아래의 질문은
TOEFL iBT Independent Writing에
출제된 문제입니다.
질문을 읽고 가장 먼저 해야할 일은 바로
brainstorming을 해야합니다.
동의 할 것인지 동의 하지 않을 것인지 재빨리 정하고,
각각에 대한 논리적인 근거를 적어도
2가지는 생각해야 합니다.
이 시간이 5분을 넘지 않도록 합니다.
[Question]
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Sometimes it is better to be dishonest with people than to always tell them the truth. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
위의 질문을 읽고, 동의 혹은 동의하지 않는 쪽으로
마음의 결정을 하셨나요?
논리적인 근거도 2가지 정도 찾으셨겠죠?
그럼 바로,
Introduction (서론), Body (본론),
Conclusion (결론)의 형식으로
글을 구상하시면서 써내려 가면됩니다.
보통, 서론을 1 문단, 본론은 2문단,
결론을 1 문단으로 하여 약 4개의 문단으로
글을 작성하면 최소 300자가 넘게 됩니다.
글을 작성하는 시간을 25분 정도로 잡으면 좋습니다.

모범 답안을 살펴 볼까요?
[The Sample Essay]
(서론 1)
Maintaining healthy relationships can be very difficult in today’s world, and there are many aspects of our interactions with others that we need to worry about. In my opinion, there are times when it is better to not tell the truth to others. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay. (위에 붉은 볼드체로 강조된 부분이 바로 Thesis Statement입니다. 자신의 의견을 확실하게 나타내주는 주제문이죠. 또한 “two reasons”라는 언급을 통해 앞으로 글이 2가지의 근거로 전개될 것이라는 것도 보여주고 있습니다)
(본론 1)
First of all, telling small lies can sometimes motivate the people we care about to excel. (영미권 국가의 글은 “두괄식” 잊지 않으셨죠? 본론 첫번째 문단의 주제문입니다.작은 선의의 거짓말이 때때로 사람들에게 동기부여를 준다는 것을 근거로 내세웠습니다. 이어지는 글들은 주제문을 뒷받침해주는 supporting sentences로 구성됩니다.) Humans are very competitive and want to be the best at whatever task they have been assigned. Whether they are involved in an athletic event or taking a test at school, they feel more motivated if they think it is possible that they will achieve an impressive result. In cases like these, sometimes lying about their potential can encourage them to perform well. My own experience is a compelling example of this. Last year, my husband signed up for a marathon in our city. I knew that he would struggle to even finish the event, but I wanted him to feel confident about his ability. Accordingly, when he asked me for my opinion, I lied and said that he had a chance of finishing in the top ten. This gave him a lot of confidence and he dedicated himself to training for the marathon. Even though he did not win the race, my small lie was enough to maintain his motivation both before and during the race. Had I told him what I really thought, he might have given up altogether.

Secondly, being honest all of the time can lead to high levels of anxiety. (본론 두번째 문단의 주제문이죠. 항상 정직해야 한다는 것이 우리에게 깊은 걱정과 근심을 가져다 줄 수 있다는 것을 근거로 들고 있습니다. 본론 2번째 문단 역시 주제문을 뒷받침하는 supporting sentences로 구성된 것 보이시나요?) If we tell unpleasant truths, we may spend days or hours worrying about the possible consequences of what we have revealed. For instance, last week a colleague asked me what I thought of her new hairstyle. I was honest, and said that I thought it looked terrible. Though she did not express any anger at my remarks, I could see that she was really hurt by what I said. As a result of this, I spent the rest of the day worrying that I had jeopardized our friendship. My emotional state greatly reduced my productivity that day, and I am still a bit nervous that my colleague will hold a grudge against me. Had I simply said that her hair looked wonderful, I could have avoided all of these feelings.
(결론 1)
In conclusion, I believe that there are times when it is best to not tell the truth to others. This is because lies can motivate people to perform well, and because always being honest can sometimes cause personal turmoil. (결론으로는, 서론에서 썼던 thesis statement를 paraphrasing하고 있습니다. 그리고 자신의 두가지 근거를 다시 요약하며 글을 마무리 하고 있습니다. 간단하면서도 명료한 결론이죠?) (Total 438 words)
위의 샘플 에세이는
서론 1문단, 본론 2 문단, 결론 1문단으로
전체적으로 4문단으로 되어있습니다.

바로, 다시 한번 자신의 글을 읽고,
오타가 없는지 혹은 수정해야 할 부분이 없는지
확인하시면 됩니다.

자신의 주장을 논리적으로 써내려가면
기본 점수를 받게 되며, 탁월한 아이디어,
논리적인 글, 혹은 고급 어휘를
적절하게 잘 사용하면
더 높은 점수를 받게 되는 것이죠.
